Let’s start with a simple Greek dessert: Melomakarona. This sweet and simple dessert consists of biscuits made with honey, orange, and nuts, which impart a citrus flavor.
Diples are crispy Greek desserts that are fried with olive oil. Like Melomakarona, they are made with honey and nuts but have a much crispier and lighter texture. They are similar to phyllo dough.
Kourabiedes are a classic Greek dessert. They are cookies made with butter and almonds and coated in sugar. If you know someone who loves almond cookies, we highly recommend kourabiedes.
Vassilopita is part of a New Year’s tradition in Greece. It is a sweet citrus cake that is simple and round. Traditionally, this cake is served at New Year’s Parties, where the cake is cut exactly at midnight.
Although not as commonly found as other desserts, this bread roughly translates to Christ’s Bread is often served around Christmas time in Greece. It is a sweet bread made with raisins, cinnamon, and sometimes anise.
Mamoulia comes from the Greek island of Chios and is often found on other nearby Greek islands. Mamoulia are stuffed pastries made with nuts or almonds.
